Raul Chapa Valdez, M.D., is well known in Mexico for his work as a bariatric surgeon. As the distinguished head of our weight-loss center at the Hospital CIMA Santa Engracia, Dr. Chapa Valdez has successfully helped patients from northern Mexico and throughout the United States for many years.
Dr. Chapa Valdez attended medical school at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. Upon receiving his degree in 1987, he practiced general medicine for one year before beginning a general surgery residency at the Hospital Altas Especialidades at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, which he completed in 1992. He was certified by the Mexican Council of General Surgery in 2002, and was recertified in 2007. Dr. Chapa Valdez has been performing bariatric surgery since 1994. In 1996, he began performing laparoscopic bariatric surgery as well. In addition, he has performed over 3,000 procedures involving the LAP-BAND® System.
Since starting his practice in Monterrey, our weight-loss surgeon has remained committed to expanding and refining his knowledge about the latest bariatric surgery techniques. After becoming a doctor, he continued to take a wide range of specialized courses, ranging from nutrition and gastroenterology to laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery for morbid obesity. In addition to his extensive training and experience, Dr. Chapa Valdez has numerous professional affiliations that reflect his reputation as a premier weight-loss surgeon. He has been a professor of surgery at many fine institutions, including the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, the University of Monterrey, and the Technological Institute for Advanced Studies in Monterrey. In addition, he is an associate professor at the Hospital Christus Muguerza and the Hospital San José TEC de Monterrey, where he provides training to residents in general surgery.
